Post-holiday Cleaning Tips to Get Your Home Back to Normal

As the post-holiday season comes to a close, it can be overwhelming to think about all the post-holiday clean-up that needs to be done. From decorations to wrapping paper and everything in between, it can be hard to know where to start. But don’t worry! With these post-holiday cleaning tips, you’ll have your home back to normal in no time. From simple steps like making a plan to more complex tasks like organizing decorations, these post-holiday cleaning tips will help you make the most of your post-holiday clean-up efforts.

Assess the Damage

First, take a look around and make note of what needs to be done. You may want to start by making a checklist or a list of tasks so you know exactly what you need to do and how long it will take. Also, don’t forget to assess any damage that may have occurred during your gatherings, such as scratches or dents on furniture or carpets. If you need to make repairs, make sure you add this to your list.

Next, set aside some time for cleaning and make sure you have all the necessary supplies. This includes vacuums, cleaning solutions, dusting cloths, sponges, and garbage bags. Once you have all your supplies ready, you can begin tackling the mess one area at a time.

Toss the Trash

Getting rid of all the wrapping paper, used gift bags, empty boxes, and other holiday detritus is a great way to start your post-holiday cleaning on the right foot. All of those used items can create a lot of clutter and make your home look messy.

Start by setting aside a few trash bags and designate one for recyclable materials and one for the regular trash. Then, go around your house and collect all the used items that need to be discarded. This includes paper plates, napkins, ribbons, bows, used cards, and anything else that isn’t being reused or recycled.

For any holiday decorations you don’t want to keep, like Christmas trees, lights, garlands, and wreaths, separate these from the trash and place them in a designated spot so they can be taken away easily. If you plan on donating or reselling any items, now is the time to put them aside so they don’t get lost in the holiday clean-up frenzy.

Put Away the Decorations

1. Gather all of your holiday decorations into one area. Start by finding a spot in your home that is easy to access and can accommodate all of your decorations. This will make it easier to keep track of what you need to put away.

2. Sort through your decorations and separate them accordingly. Some decorations may need to be put away in storage, while others might just need to be placed back in their original locations.

3. If you have any breakable items, such as glass ornaments or porcelain figurines, wrap them carefully in bubble wrap or packing paper to prevent any damage during storage.

4. Once you have all of your decorations sorted, store them in labeled boxes or containers for easy access next year.

A Brief History of Kwanzaa and How to Celebrate It

Kwanzaa is an African-American cultural observance that falls in the month of December. In the United States, it was created by Maulana Karenga in 1966 as an alternative to Christmas and Hanukkah, but more representative of African-American culture and history. The first Kwanzaa celebration was held on December 26th, 1966, and continues today as a recognized holiday by African-Americans across the world. It celebrates the African harvest and key cultural values.

We wish you a Happy Kwanzaa from Cardinal Cleaning! We hope to educate and spread cultural awareness through our community near Conyers, Georgia and beyond. Continue reading to learn more!

The Definition of Kwanzaa

Kwanzaa is a seven-day African American holiday that celebrates family, community, and culture. It is typically observed from December 26 to January 1st. The name Kwanzaa comes from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza” which roughly translates to “first fruits of the harvest”. Kwanzaa was coined in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga as a way to bring African Americans together after the Watts Riots and tumultuous times. Families celebrate Kwanzaa and their culture by cleaning and decorating their homes, exchanging gifts, and spending time with loved ones.

The History of Kwanzaa

On each day, one of the seven principles is honored through an activity related to its meaning. For example, on December 27th the principle of unity is celebrated with a feast, while on December 31st self-determination is honored with cleanliness rituals. It is historically significant as it encourages African Americans to appreciate and bask in their heritage or culture, regardless of where they now live. This is extra meaningful as they faced many struggles and were often discriminated against. So, it gives them an opportunity to celebrate all that they have overcome as a community, as well as motivation to continue the legacy.

What Are The Seven Principles For Living

As aforementioned, Kwanzaa is a seven-day African American holiday, and each day focuses on one of the seven key principles. The seven principles of Kwanzaa are unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. People celebrate Kwanzaa by lighting a kinara (candle holder with seven candles), giving gifts, decorating with colors that represent the holiday (black, red, and green), and feasting. On the first day of Kwanzaa, a black candle is lit in the center of the kinara followed by three red candles on the left side and three green candles on the right side.

Cleaning and Decorating for Kwanzaa

Before Kwanzaa can begin, you need to make sure your home is clean and decorated. After all, this is a time to celebrate! Start by giving your home a good cleaning. Wash the windows, vacuum the floors, and dust everything off. Once your home is clean, you can start decorating. To celebrate Kwanzaa, many people clean their homes and decorate them with African symbols. One popular decoration is the kinara, which is a seven-branched candelabra. Each branch represents one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa.

Other decorations include colorful fabrics, fruits, vegetables, and grains. Many people use red, black, and green to decorate for Kwanzaa. These colors represent different aspects of African culture. Red represents the blood that was shed during the struggle for freedom, black represents the African people, and green represents the growth and prosperity of Africa. You can use these colors in any way you like – whether that be through traditional decorations like candles or through more modern decorations like hanging banners or streamers.

8 Special Nights: A Beginner’s Guide to Hanukkah

From December 18th through the 26th, people all over the world will celebrate the Jewish Festival of Lights, Hanukkah. While this ancient festival may seem foreign to many people in America, it’s full of fun and meaningful traditions that are worth learning about and embracing.

Cardinal Cleaning, we appreciate diversity in our state of Georgia and hope to heighten cultural awareness through our professional cleaning service’s platform. Here’s what you need to know about Hanukkah and its eight nights of festivities!

The History of Hanukkah

Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday that commemorates the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. Hanukkah lasts for eight nights and starts on the 25th day of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar. During the eight nights of Hanukkah, a special menorah is lit. Each night, one more candle is added until all eight are burning. Hanukkah is also a time for gift giving and feasting. Families gather to eat fried foods, play games, and exchange gifts. There are many different types of foods eaten during this festival, but latkes (fried potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts) are the most popular.

The Hanukkah Traditions

Hanukkah has similar traditions to Diwali, and is known as the Jewish festival of lighting lights, during the darkest time of the year. It celebrates rededication, rekindled spirits, hope and determination. Together, the community recollects on stories of the past and commemorates a historical event, as well as the diligence of their loved ones. They cherish these virtues and quality time with family and friends.

The Decorations

  1. Hang a star of David or dreidel somewhere visible in your home.
  2. Put up a menorah in each window.
  3. Cover your table with a white tablecloth and place a menorah in the center.
  4. Set out plates, napkins, and utensils for each person who will be celebrating with you.
  5. Fill a bowl with latkes or jelly donuts.
  6. Place candles around the room to add ambiance and light up the night.
  7. Hang strings of blue and white lights around your doorways and windows.

Dreidels and the Star of Davis are classic symbols. The colors blue and white are also used, like the red and green of Christmas. Blue is the chosen color as it is mentioned several times in Jewish religious texts.

The Recipes

One of our favorite recipes is to make the aforementioned Latkes, or potato pancakes. They are absolutely delicious and are a must try – whether you purchase them or make them. Here is a recipe you can try to taste and also share with your loved ones.

You will need potatoes, of course. Other key ingredients include flour, eggs, baking powder, pepper, and oil. You can also season as per your liking. This is the perfect savory snack to balance out your holiday sweet tooth!

The Festivities

Activities include lighting the menorah, praying, and cherishing their ancestors. There are dreidel games and contests, as well as several songs to sing along to. There are also lots of delicious snacks, as aforementioned. In addition, there are desserts and chocolates known as gelt, unique disc shaped, coin-like chocolates. There is also gift giving. Most importantly, there is lots of family time.

Instead of being celebrated in the Synagogue, Hanukkah is mainly celebrated at home. This reduces formalities and encourages people to slow down, show gratitude, and cherish time with their loved ones! No matter how you spend Hanukkah or your holiday of choice, Cardinal Cleaning is here to take chores off of your plate, so you can enjoy such activities!

The best gift you can give is your time. Plan a calendar of dates with someone you love. Whether it’s a standing coffee date or game night, this will let them know that you care about spending time with them. If you don’t have the money to buy an experience, you can always volunteer together. Donate clothes to a shelter and spend the day there sorting and organizing things for the people who need them most. Or volunteer at a local animal shelter, food bank, or something similar! This will make you feel warm on the inside and also help create memories this holiday season!

The Gift of Taste

It’s tough to go wrong with the gift of taste. You can bake something special, give a new cookbook or some fun kitchen gadgets, or even pick up a few restaurant gift cards. This gift is thoughtful for anyone and works no matter what stage of life someone is since we all have to eat! For example, for a college student or someone moving into their first apartment, they would probably really appreciate the kitchen supplies. For someone trying to get into cooking, new recipes would be key. For someone who loves your cooking, take a treat! The list goes on.

Boost Their Self-Esteem

Give the gift of self-esteem! This just means to give something emphasizing self care and how loved they are. Here are some ideas:

1. A personalized mug with a positive message
2. A “You’re Awesome” jar filled with encouraging notes

Treat Them To A Spa Day

Christmas is a hectic time of year, so why not give the gift of relaxation? A spa day or massage is the perfect way to unwind and rejuvenate. Plus, it’s a great way to show your loved ones how much you care. Massages are available at any price point, from massages at home to in-spa treatments. There are many options for those who are on a budget. Try an at-home foot scrub gift basket with Epsom salts. You can also add relaxing bath products like lavender bubble bath or eucalyptus shower gel to tie it all together!

Contribute to An Experience

A great way to show you care is by contributing to an experience. Concert tickets, for example, are always a great idea. They can be used by the recipient at their convenience and provide them with an enjoyable evening out. Alternatively, if your loved one enjoys traveling, you could help save up for a trip abroad. By giving the gift of an experience, you’re sure to please anyone on your list this holiday season. By gifting an experience, you will help their dreams come true and also give the gift of new memories!

Buy Them A Personalized Gift

A personalized gift is always a great idea because it shows that you took the time to think about them specifically. It can be something as simple as a mug with their name on it or a keychain with their initials. You can also get more creative and buy them something that represents their interests or hobbies. For example, if they love to travel, you could get them a map of the world to hang in their home as a reminder that there are always new places to explore.

A Gift That Keeps On Giving

A subscription to a magazine, a monthly delivery of flowers, or even tickets to a show or concert series are all gifts that keep on giving long after Christmas is over. For the foodie in your life, consider treating them to a year-long subscription to a foodie box service like Blue Apron or Hello Fresh so they can experience new recipes each week. If you know someone who loves yoga, spin class or anything like that, look into ClassPass or similar subscriptions. There really is a subscription system for each person in your life to continue enjoying even after Christmas!

The Five Minute Journal can help someone gain more clarity, focus, and creativity in life. 5 Tips on How to Keep Your Carpet Clean

Carpets are an essential part of any home because they provide excellent insulation and padding underfoot, while also adding aesthetic value to the room. However, carpets can harbor dust, dirt, bacteria, pet dander, and mold spores, which can negatively affect your health if you inhale or ingest them. Regularly cleaning your carpet can prevent this from happening and keep it looking great as well. Here are five tips from Cardinal Cleaning on how to keep your carpet clean and elevate its lifespan!

Invest in mats and rugs.

One way to help keep your carpets clean is to invest in mats and rugs. By doing this, you can help trap dirt and other debris before it has a chance to get on your carpets. Plus, it’s an easy way to add a bit of style to your home. You could use area rugs as a way to tie your living room together or as decoration. But don’t stop there – you could also use area rugs under furniture such as the sofa or dining table. It will act as another layer of protection for those areas that are more susceptible to wear and tear due to constant use.

Vacuum regularly!

The single most important thing you can do to keep your carpets clean is to vacuum them regularly. At least once a week, if not more. This will help remove the dirt, dust, and other debris that can get trapped in the fibers and lead to long-term damage.

But don’t just go over the surface! Be sure to move your vacuum back and forth in different directions, and even go over each section multiple times. This will help ensure that you’re really getting all the dirt out.

Speaking of vacuuming, it is crucial that you invest in a quality vacuum! So if you’re still using a hand-me-down vacuum or one that’s getting rusty, it’s time to make the switch to a newer, technologically advanced alternative. The last thing you want to do is have an old vacuum that doesn’t work as well because it will just make your carpet dirtier. A good quality vacuum will also give your carpet the deep cleaning it needs. If this sounds like something you need, be sure to buy one soon because the longer you wait, the more dirt gets ground into your carpet!

Get rid of spills quickly!

As soon as something is spilled on your carpet, it’s important to take care of it right away. The longer a spill sits, the more likely it is to become a long-lasting stain. To get rid of spills quickly, blot the area with a clean, dry cloth. You can also use a vacuum with the hose attachment to suck up small spills. And if you have kids or pets who like to eat off the floor, cover your carpets and floors with a protective rug runner or placemats.

Avoid carpet cleaning powders.

Avoid using carpet cleaning powders. Such powders seem like a quick fix. But in reality, the powder builds up and can damage your carpet further. Powders also make it hard for dirt to move off of the carpet, so you’ll have to keep reapplying them. Clean with detergent instead.: Instead of dusting with powder, clean your carpets with soap or detergent. You can mix these cleaners with water or vinegar (either will work) in a bucket and use a mop or other tool to scrub away stains from the rug. Rinse well afterward. Afterward, rinse the area thoroughly or use a special vacuum.

Schedule a professional carpet cleaning!

One of the best ways to keep your carpets clean is to schedule a professional cleaning. This way, you can be sure that all the dirt and grime will be removed from your carpets, leaving them looking and smelling fresh. Here are a few tips to help you choose a carpet cleaning company:

  • Get quotes from multiple companies. Get quotes from a few different companies so you can compare prices and services.
  • Check reviews online: A quick Google search will reveal a wealth of information about local carpet cleaning companies.

To summarize:

Scheduling a carpet cleaning is very valuable and will increase the lifespan of your carpets. You can also get a consultation to see if your carpets need to be replaced.

  • Buy a rug or mat for inside entrances.
  • Vacuum regularly.
  • Invest in cleaning supplies.
  • Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when applying any product or service so there are no surprises (for example, some carpet cleaners require 24 hours before pets can return).
  • Schedule a professional carpet cleaning.

Additionally, scheduling a home cleaning with Cardinal Cleaning will also help lengthen the life of your carpets as we use top-notch products and vacuums to alleviate dust, grime, and stains!

8 Things You’re Not Cleaning in Your Home (But Should Be)

When it comes to taking care of your home, it’s important to do everything you can to keep things looking shiny and new. However, it’s easy to lose sight of everyday cleaning tasks that could make a big difference in the appearance of your home, and the true cleanliness of your environment. Check out this blog, as Cardinal Cleaning’s professionals detail eight cleaning tasks you might be overlooking.

1) Computer keyboard

A keyboard is one of the dirtiest places in your home, and it’s full of germs. A study by the University of Arizona found that computer keyboards have more germs than toilet seats. Yuck! So it’s important to clean your keyboard regularly to prevent the spread of illness. Here are some tips for keeping your keyboard as clean as possible:

  • Keep your desk or workstation neat so you can find things when you need them.
  • Make sure you wipe down all surfaces with antibacterial wipes on a regular basis.
  • Get into the habit of using disposable gloves when touching anything that might be dirty, such as wiping up spills on your desk or using the bathroom.
  • Get a keyboard cover or mat to reduce the dust piling up.

2) Chargers and cables

While you’re at it, you may want to wipe down all of your devices with screen cleaning wipes. We are always touching our devices, even between meals. Plus, we hold our phones up to our faces, so the dirt and germs can easily transfer to our skin, mouth, and so on. Hence, it is so important to wipe down the devices, chargers, and cables that we are always using. Just think about it – we use these items nearly every day, but how frequently do we clean them?

3) Door knobs

You might not think to clean your door knobs, but they are actually one of the dirtiest things in your home. Door knobs are constantly touched by dirty hands, and they can easily become covered in bacteria. Plus, if you have pets, their fur can also transfer onto door knobs. To keep them clean, simply wipe them down with a disinfectant wipe or a cloth dampened with soapy water.

4) Microwave

If you’re like most people, your microwave probably sees a lot of action. Whether you’re reheating leftovers or making popcorn, chances are you use it several times a week. But how often do you clean it? If the answer is not very, you’re not alone. A survey by NSF International found that 40 percent of people never clean their microwaves. Believe it or not, even if you don’t cook with oil and you always wipe up spills immediately, there can still be enough residue from cooking to cause an odor problem. To remove food particles and other gunk from inside your microwave, consider these tips:

  • Clean the entire door — edges, both sides, and where it seals the oven — with a sponge dampened with water and dipped in a little baking soda.
  • Wipe with a damp cloth or sponge to rinse.
  • For a greasy window, clean with a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water.
  • Rinse and wipe dry

5) Trash Can

Let’s face it, your trash can is probably one of the dirtiest things in your home. But we often forget to clean it because, well, it’s a trash can. So make sure to give it a good scrub down every few weeks. Don’t forget to clean the lid too! And if you have pets, remember that they will get into anything and everything so be diligent about keeping the area around the trash can clean as well. Next time you empty out the bin, think about tossing some citrus peels or essential oils on top of any food scraps left over to help cut down on odors.

6) Washing machine lint trap filter

Most people don’t realize that their washing machine has a lint trap filter that needs to be cleaned on a regular basis. A lint trap filter helps to prevent lint and other debris from clogging up your washing machine and causing it to break down. Over time, the lint trap filter can become clogged with lint and other debris, which can reduce the efficiency of your washing machine and cause it to break down. To clean your washing machine’s lint trap filter, simply remove it from the washing machine and rinse it off with warm water. You can also scrape with an old toothbrush. You should also clean the area around the lint trap filter to ensure that there is no build-up of lint or other debris.

7) Refrigerator

Most people think to clean the refrigerator when they see spills or when it’s time to do a deep clean of the kitchen. But you should be cleaning your fridge more often than that! At least once a week, you should wipe down the shelves and dispose of any expired products. A build-up of bacteria can cause food poisoning, so it’s important to keep your fridge clean. Plus, expired items can cause odors and also take up unnecessary space.

8) Pillows, sheets, mattress cover

We all know we should be washing our sheets and pillowcases regularly. How often is “regular”? You should really be changing your pillowcases weekly and sheets biweekly. This is important for your health, and also your skin. Don’t forget about the other elements that don’t get washed as often, like your mattress cover!
